
Shocks vs Struts vs Springs: How Van Suspension Works
Suspensions look complicated because people describe them as one system.
They're 3 separate jobs, done by 3 separate parts, and almost every ride complaint traces back to one of the three being overwhelmed.
Engineering fix: Springs first. Struts and shocks are both fighting a losing battle without the right spring underneath them.

Springs carry the load
A spring is a rated energy storage device. Its job is to hold the vehicle at a designed ride height so the dampers have room to work in both directions.
On a Sprinter or Transit rear axle that spring is almost always a leaf pack, stacked plates of spring steel that also locate the solid axle.
Undersprung packs are why your rear sags and sways in the wind. No shock on earth can fix a spring that has given up.

Struts control front geometry
A strut is a damper that is also a structural member.
It holds the front knuckle in place so camber, caster, and toe stay where the alignment tech set them.
Without proper front support, steering gets vague and the van wanders at highway speed.

Shocks control motion
A shock, or damper, turns motion into heat.
Compression damping resists the suspension folding up, rebound damping resists it springing back.
Shocks can't hold weight.
They only manage how fast weight moves, which is why a fresh shock on a tired spring will feel better for a season and then fail the same way the old one did.

Sway bars, airbags, and spacers are situational
A sway bar ties the two sides together so the body rolls less in a corner. On a van already sitting on bump stops, the stock bar has almost no travel left to work with, and it does nothing for crosswind push. Bump stops are the last safety net, not the primary spring. Shear Brackets
A single shear mount is a bolted connection where the fastener carries load on one face only. That's the factory Sprinter rear shock's lower mount design, and it's prone to bending or shearing once real weight and rough roads are added.
A double shear bracket captures the bolt from both sides instead of one, cheap insurance against a problem that shows up as a loose or damaged shock mount over time.

A strut is a damper that also holds the front wheel's geometry in place. A shock is a damper only, with a separate part holding the geometry. Sprinters and Transits use struts up front and leaf sprung shocks in the rear.
Dynamic sag is the percentage of total shock travel used up just by the van sitting there at rest. A healthy adventure van setup typically wants 30 to 35 percent of stroke used at rest, so the damper can compress over a bump and extend into a hole. If static ride height has already eaten the compression stroke, you're driving on the bump stops, and that's a spring problem first, not a shock problem.
Only as a finishing piece on a van that's already properly supported. It does almost nothing on a van still sitting on its bump stops.
