You feel it when a semi passes. The steering wheel gets light, cups walk across the counter, a driveway exit at 8 mph rocks the whole cabinet wall.

None of that's "just how vans are." It's mass, height, and a spring rate that was never meant for this job.

Rear-axle overhang overwhelms factory suspension

A cargo Sprinter or Transit starts life with a low, dense payload sitting on the floor between the axles.

A finished adventure van puts water, batteries, cabinetry, a bathroom, a spare tire, and often a bike rack much higher and much farther aft.

Two things change at once:

  1. center of gravity goes up, so every gust and every off camber driveway has more leverage to roll the body
  2. rear axle load goes up, often more than the scale weight of the accessory itself. A tire carrier on the back door isn't 150 lb of spare, it's 150 lb on a lever behind the axle.

Your Suspension wasn't built wrong

Mercedes and Ford didn't cheap out, they built a delivery van.

The rear pack, the front struts, and the damper valving assume a van that's heavy on Monday and empty on Friday.

A built Revel, Ekko, Storyteller, Tiffin GH1, or custom conversion is heavy every day. The leaves flatten, the van sits on the rubber bump stops, and the shocks now try to do two jobs at once, control motion and hold weight.

That's why "I already put new shocks on it and it still wanders" is the most common sentence in this business.

Frequently Asked Questions

A strut is a damper that also holds the front wheel's geometry in place. A shock is a damper only, with a separate part holding the geometry. Sprinters and Transits use struts up front and leaf sprung shocks in the rear.

Dynamic sag is the percentage of total shock travel used up just by the van sitting there at rest. A healthy adventure van setup typically wants 30 to 35 percent of stroke used at rest, so the damper can compress over a bump and extend into a hole. If static ride height has already eaten the compression stroke, you're driving on the bump stops, and that's a spring problem first, not a shock problem.

Only as a finishing piece on a van that's already properly supported. It does almost nothing on a van still sitting on its bump stops.
