
The Physics of Van Accessories
It's tempting to add up the product weight of a ski box, tire carrier, or bike rack and stop there.
But where the weight sits changes how hard it hits your axles. Anything hung behind the rear axle acts like a lever, putting more load on the rear springs than its actual weight while unloading the front.

Weight over the axle is clean
A water tank in the spare basket sits low and basically over the rear axle, loading the spring while keeping the mass low.
Almost 1:1 onto the rear springs, the best kind of added mass.

Weight behind the axle is leveraged
A spare tire and carrier on the back door is 100+ lb behind the axle, and accessories mounted there act like a lever, adding roughly a 1/4 to a 1/3 more load to the rear than they weigh on the scale, while lifting weight off the front.
Shorter wheelbase Sprinters feel this multiplier more.
That front unloading means less steering authority, more wander in crosswinds, and changed front ride height, which is why front struts matter just as much as rear springs.

Center of gravity is a separate question from weight
A tall ski box, roof rack, or high mounted bike rack pushes weight upward.
That makes every corner and lane change feel bigger, and it's controlled by damping, geometry, and track width, not spring rate alone.

Don't overspring for weight that isn't there yet
A pack rated for the bumper and tank you'll add next year will feel harsh and unsettled while the van is still light.
That's why most owners have major weight adding work and the suspension upgrade done during the same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Often they left you the choice on purpose. Final weight wasn't known, or the builder certifies a finished vehicle to upfitter guidelines and doesn't want to own driveline angle risk. That flexibility is useful. Your suspension preference is different from one Revel owner to another.
Look at the arch and weigh the axle. Looks hide a pack that's already on the bump stops.
